John J Smith

Certified Yoga Therapist · 40+ years of practice

A patient, grounded teacher who has spent a lifetime learning how the body, breath and mind steady one another — and who knows, from his own experience, what it takes to come back from injury.

His story

It started, as these things often do, with the body asking for help.

John's yoga journey began in 1982. But it was a sports injury — and the slow, humbling process of recovering from it — that showed him what yoga could really do. With the right practice, he found his way back to feeling physically, mentally and emotionally well. That experience still shapes how he teaches today: with patience, without judgement, and always at the pace the body can meet.

In 1987 he travelled to Mysore, South India, to study under one of modern yoga's most eminent teachers, Shri Pattabhi Jois. He went on to study Raja Yoga under Shri Parthasarathi Rajagopalachari of the Heartfulness Institute in Chennai. Across more than four decades, he has developed deep experience in yogasana, yoga therapy, meditation, pranayama and yoga philosophy.

What he loves most is simple: walking alongside people who are ready to feel better in themselves — and helping them get there one honest step at a time.
